Due to the premature death of his grandson 'Harikrishna Rai', the eighth guru, he was made the ninth guru by public opinion. He got Anandpur Sahib built and he started living there. His childhood name was Tyagamal. At the age of only 14, he showed valor with his father in the war against the Mughal attack.
Impressed by his valor, his father changed his name from Tyagmal to Tegh Bahadur (rich of swords). The horrific bloodshed in the battlefield had a profound effect on the recluse mind of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji and his mind turned towards spiritual contemplation. Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, an idol of patience, detachment and renunciation, meditated in solitude for 20 years at a place called 'Baba Bakala'. The eighth Guru Harkishan ji instructed 'Baba Bakale' to name his successor. Guru ji visited many places for the spread of religion. From Anandpur Sahib via Kiratpur, Plantation, Saifabad, they reached Khiala (Khadal). While preaching here, he reached Kurukshetra via Damdama Sahib. From Kurukshetra on the banks of the Yamuna, he reached Kadamanakpur and it was here that he saved the sadhu Bhai Malukdas.The world gets inspiration from such sacrifices, who gave their lives, but did not give up the truth. Ninth Patshah Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji was also such a sacrificer. Guru Ji gave his life not for himself but to protect the rights and beliefs of others. History is full of examples of those who sacrifice for their faith, but the only example of sacrificing someone else's faith is the martyrdom of the ninth Patshah.
